Chris:             A Twit seat? A Tweat? (laughter).  A profile, we’re working on a profile for us, and what we really want to do with that to kind of guide our customers.  And things that we can do is let them know that there’s a podcast, which can drive them to our site.  And let them know we’re about to do…..this is exciting….what are we going to do later today?

Paul:               A videocast.

Chris:             Alright!

Paul:               So people get to see our handsome face.

Chris:             And we’re also going to try our hand at a viral video.

Paul:               Yeah, that’s going to be funny.

Chris:             I think it’s going to be funny.  And you know, sometimes viral videos, they’re either really good or lame or whatever.  We don’t know what it’s going to be….that’s great….we’re going to have a lot of fun with it.  Probably by the time this podcast comes out, we’ll have that video up somewhere, so if you’re listening to this, go ahead and look for this and you might find it.  Also, if you have some sort of concept for a viral SEO video that you’d like to see us do, you know Paul and I are game for pretty much anything.

Paul:               Yeah, please do send it to us. I’d love to hear it.

Paul:               A shout out?

Chris:             Yeah, trying to use some other word here.

Paul:               That’s the best way to say it  Everybody gets a shout out, and thanks again John, we really appreciate that.

Chris:             So you were talking about social media.

Paul:               I’m going to say yes, you should have social media but should you have a social media profile just for the sake of having it?  To that, I’ll say no.  And I say it’s a fine line because….okay, here’s an example.  I read an article and which magazine is this, website magazine….I’m not sure which issue it is….in the July 2009 article.  And it was a great article about using social media to boost your business.  And this one particular…..

Chris:             Specifically, Tweeter.

Paul:               Yeah, specifically Twitter. This one company put on a….

Chris:             Did I say Tweeter?

(laughter)

Paul:               This one company, a burrito company….actually a Utah based Mexican restaurant chain called Costa Vita….they sent a one day offer for a free burrito to it’s eighty Twitter followers as a kind of a promotion to kind of bring business in the door.  And it was a huge success.  They’re thinking….okay….we’re going to give eighty free burritos max.  What they didn’t realize is that they sent it to their followers….they sent it to their friends and then they sent it to their friends and more than twenty-five hundred people walked in the door with this free burrito coupon.

Chris:             Twenty-five hundred?

Paul:               More than -five hundred.  They sent it to eighty people.

Chris:             WOW!

Chris: Tell you what. Go back and listen to the last podcast and pop us an email and we’ll include it in this podcast.

Paul: I’m looking through my notes, and I’m like…..uhhh…..Chastity Bono, we did “shouts out” to the guys who sent us emails and then there’s a big blank.

Chris: Did we do Costa Rica last week?

Paul: I don’t know…..I can’t remember.

Chris: Anyway, we did a really nice podcast on Costa Rica awhile back, so you guys should go check that out. If you’ve got an email to send us, keep those emails coming. We’re getting some good responses…we’re getting some interesting responses. We probably told this story, but I’ve been telling it to all sorts of people. We got a call from Costa Rica wanting some search engine optimization services and we’re really excited. We haven’t done anything to target Costa Rica.

Paul: Yeah.

Paul: I love You Tube. I have an igoogle home page and one of the applications on it is You Tube. I’m there all the time. Remember that MC Hammer dance video?

Chris: Oh, Yeah.

Paul: That was hilarious. I love You Tube. I spend a lot of time on You Tube, so it’s….

Chris: What was that called? Hammer Pants or something…..

Paul: It was like…..Hammer Pants Dance video in LA. If you guys have like…two or three minutes to kill….look up Hammer Pants Dance in LA. It was a bunch of people who danced…….You remember the MC Hammer, Can’t Touch This video? They did the dance from that video and it must have been about forty people. It was hilarious.

Chris: And they did it in a store….like a regular clothing store.

Paul: Live, on Sunset I believe. The store is called Live and it’s on Sunset Boulevard, I think.

Chris: It’s actually a cool video.

Paul: I thought it was really cool.

Chris: So, yes, you find videos on You Tube. Actually, I’ve been a member of Stumble Upon for awhile. I’m not like….active in the community or anything. I just really appreciate the software and the value that it brings. So, typically while I’m eating lunch at my desk, if I don’t…..if I’m not out, I’ll just start clicking Stumble Upon and for those of you who don’t know, Stumble Upon is a really nice website. You create an account and you create…like a profile about videos, not videos, but web pages that you’d like to see. In my case, it’s going to be stuff on SEO, stuff on fun programming, stuff on human behavior or psychology. I like all of that stuff. And so I’m just clicking the Stumble Upon button and it just comes up to the next thing that’s in its database that’s relative to my profile that other people in Stumble Upon have liked. So, if a lot of people like it, I’m more likely to see it….it’s actually really good. Last night, I found Stumble Upon video. So you can just kind of randomly hit videos which is also pretty cool. And then you can put your comments. You can say you like it or forward it to a friend like I forwarded one to Rob, one of our business partners here, because he’s a big camper, hunter, fisherman guy. And they made a small little butane….it wasn’t actually butane….but a Coleman campfire stove out of a can. Like an aluminum can….it was pretty cool.

Chris: Inside of You Tube? Well, I wouldn’t say there’s anything more to….there isn’t….you know, that’s text. Google and Yahoo and everybody, all they can do is look at text.

Paul: Oh yeah, because they’re not going to read the video…..they can’t

Chris: So, if that’s the only text you have, you don’t have control of metatags if you will, over those particular videos. You can optimize the name of the video.

Paul: Okay.

Chris: I don’t think that has any creditability inside of You Tube though, because they usually give it a generic name. It gets….you know…a long coded name once it’s in there. So you are literally talking about….you know….I’ve got control over the title. Maybe reviews, you can have people review you.

Paul: Okay, that’s more text.

Chris: And I’m not even sure that the text of the review would help that much. It should because it’s going to get crawled by Google. But it’s the fact that it’s been reviewed and really what we start talking about now is…okay, we’ve got the right text. How do we get people to watch it?

Paul: Yeah.

Chris: And one of the points that Scott made was that you want to keep the video short, right? You’ve only got two minutes to watch Hammer Pants….you don’t have ten minutes. I mean, it turned into ten minutes

Chris: Hi! Welcome to the “Unknown Secrets of SEO” podcast!

Paul: Yes, thank you for joining us and welcome to another fun-filled edition of our “SEO” podcast.

Chris: My name is Chris Burres, owner of E-Webstyle.

Paul: And this is Paul Hanson, the sales manager at E-Webstyle.

Chris: You know, it’s in our title, “Unknown Secrets of SEO” and I don’t know that we’ve actually given away the unknown secret of SEO yet.

Paul: Is it time? Is it time that we give away the secret?

Chris: NO! It’s not time yet. But in the next podcast, we’re going to give away the Unknown Secret of SEO or Unknown Secrets of SEO.

So everyday we like to start off, last time we just kind of covered our five- point, that’s actually six -point SEO analysis of a website for a Costa Rican villa. That product is moving forward great so hopefully you guys enjoyed that. If you didn’t catch that podcast, go ahead and go back and download it. It’s a really good podcast about how we analyze a website. We now have a form on our page where you can actually fill out your name and domain name and we’ll give you a free five-point analysis. And when I say free, how long is that going to be free, Paul?

Paul: Let’s run it for a month, end of the month? Not long.

Chris: Okay, we’ll say end of the month. I like that, because that’s not long.

Paul: Yeah, get them in now, because it won’t always be free because that’s a lot of work.

(laughter)

Chris: It is a lot of work.

Nineteenth E-Webstyle.com SEO Podcast June 12th 2009.  Second page of Transcription

Chris: So let’s keep that fattest city going anyway. So let’s say that’s one of the list. So you click that, that’s the list that starts off. And then the next list is the healthiest cities, and you click that. And without the entire page refreshing, BOOM, there you have the top ten healthiest cities. And, you know, the next one could be, I don’t know, some sort of top ten things David Letterman apologized for. And again, BOOM, it comes in without refreshing your screen.

Paul: Now why would we want to stay away from using that?

Chris: That’s a great question. Because Google and the Bots out there, so that would be like Yahoo Bots and again, Bots are the name that we give to the software that Google uses to go through your website and figure out what’s on your website. Well they’re not going to click all those links and they’re not going to be able to read all of that dynamically generated content. And so, if your target was to be on the first page for top ten things that David Letterman apologized for, and that’s the third of those links that I just mentioned, well Google is not even going to know that that information is on your page at all. And we all know if Google doesn’t see any information on your page relevant to a certain thing, you are not optimizing for that. So, does that make sense?

Paul: That makes perfect sense. And you know to someone, like when I first came across this, my first thought was, okay, well, dynamically changing content is a good thing. You want to have changing content. And I was first thinking, Oh, kind of like an RSS feed. It gives you dynamic content, you know if you have an RSS feed on your website, the contents change and Google likes it, it looks good. And that was what I was thinking at first, till I actually made the distinction between doing that and then, Ajax. Ajax is not going to be Googleable, excuse me, to be spidered.

Chris: Spiderable.

Paul: Yeah, there we go. I’m just making up words.

(laughter)

Chris: It’s a good day for that. Ajax, cleaning my sink. No, that’s exactly right. There is actually, you know, normally when a page refreshes there’s what’s called a server hit and that means that there’s a request from your user who’s viewing your website, and it goes back to the server that’s hosting your website and then sends new content. That does actually occur in Ajax, but it occurs on the page so the entire page doesn’t refresh.

The other thing that’s important to remember is, say you wanted to send the list of top ten things that David Letterman apologized for, to a friend. Because the URL is not changing on that page, the best you can do is send them the URL and then tell them to click the top ten David Letterman apologies list. So you’ve only given them a two step process. Whereas, if you have, if a new page refreshes, not only is it good because Google can see it, but you can actually send that URL to your friend and they can go directly to the top ten things that David Letterman apologized for. I don’t know any others except Sarah Palin, saying bad things about Sarah Palin.
