Twenty-Third E-Webstyle.com SEO Podcast July 17th 2009. First page of Transcription

Chris: Hi, welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast.

Paul: Hi, thanks for joining us for another fun-filled edition of our SEO podcast.

Chris: My name is Chris Burres. I am owner of E-Webstyle.

Paul: And this is Paul Hanson, Sales Manager of E-Webstyle.

Chris: Make sure all our ringing devices are off here. We don’t want to get interrupted in this.

First things first again, I still don’t remember, do we talk news or do we talk … let’s talk the old podcast.

Paul: Yeah.

Chris: So the old podcast we talked about the possibility of using PPC for branding. That’s where you might actually do both search engine optimization and pay-per-click just so that your name’s on the page more than once on the first page. And when I say your name’s on the first page that assumes that you’re using our service.

Paul: Yes, and don’t forget also using other search engines for PPC. People get in a habit of using Google for a lot for their search. I know I do, but don’t forget there are other viable search engines that you could do a pay-per-click campaign on, not just Google.

Paul: Bill got cut in half by just saying they were going to cancel. Man, if that’s not a testament to what’s happening in the print, at least in the print Yellow Pages industry, I don’t know what is. If they’re that hungry for business where … if any industry is that hard for business where they’ll cut your bill in half just by you asking for it, just saying ‘hey, I’m going to quit.’ They’re obviously, everyone understands by now, the Yellow Pages is a dying medium. It’s not what it used to be and their doing whatever they can to hold on to what little market share that they have.

Chris: What little money they have.

Paul: Yeah.

Chris: So, you worked with Yellow Pages for a while.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: How many times did you see a reduction in the bill from when year to the next?

Paul: Never, ever!

Chris: Oh, never?

Paul: Ever, ever, ever, ever in three and a half plus years. It never ever dropped. If they went out of business it dropped. After they paid out the contract! You know, until it’s in but yeah, that’s tough. That medium you know, is a bad idea to invest in the Yellow Pages.

Twenty-Third E-Webstyle.com SEO Podcast July 17th 2009. Third page of Transcription

Chris: Yeah, you did a little analysis for her, I think, regarding her counseling costs and how much she was going to spend on that Yellow Pages.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: Can you run through that?

Paul: Well first thing, when she said ‘I’m thinking about marketing using a Yellow Pages service just to put me in some online directories’, they also have partnerships with some search engines, they’ll do her PPC and I said ‘okay, well let’s talk ROI here because it’s all about your return on investment.’ She was going to spend $450 per month, her main product costs $30 per month. Whipped out a quick calculator, comes out to 16.6 sales to recoup the cost. Well, we’ll go ahead and round that to seven. Seventeen new sales per month to pay for her advertising, that’s a break-even point. So at that point I’m like okay, ‘do you think that ATT could deliver that?’ I shouldn’t say that company name, but ‘do you think that company can deliver that?’ She didn’t really know so I tried to break it down. Let’s think about this, how much traffic do you need to bring in a … how many impressions do you need?

Chris: A new client.

Paul: Yeah. You know, how many impressions do you need to bring in a click? How many clicks do you need to bring in a sale? Let’s go over all this. It really, just the numbers didn’t work out. I said you know, ‘expecting to get 15 new sales from day one of marketing your website … it’s just not likely with your current pricing structure and with the type of services that you provide. I do think that you can market your website and make money with this service, just not the way that you’re currently doing it.’ So we had to talk a little bit about her packages, her business, and really, this was just talk about ROI. It wasn’t marketing, it wasn’t SEO.

Chris: Business structure.

Paul: Yeah, it was just, is this going make sense? If you spend this money and you’re expected to bring in you know, not as much money as you’re going to spend, let’s re-think your structure, let’s re-think how we can make this profitable for your company. Everyone should do that. You know, no matter what your product or service is, if you’re going to market, think about your ROI. I think we say that all the time.

Chris: Yeah.

Paul: It’s about ROI.

Chris: Hi, welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast.

Paul: Welcome back and thank you for joining us for another fun-filled edition of the podcast.

Chris: My name is Chris Burres. I am owner of E-Webstyle.

Paul: And this is Paul Hanson, Sales Manager of E-Webstyle.

Chris: So, as always we like to start off with a little bit of, do we start off with news or do we talk about what we did last time first?

Paul: Ahhh…I don’t remember. I should know this because we do it every week.

Chris: But let’s talk about a little bit of news.

Paul: What’s in the news today?

Chris: We have something that’s absolutely, unbelievably hilarious. Man fatally gored in running of the bulls.

Chris: It’s not that Google in terms of searches; it’s not that Google has more influence. If somebody uses Yahoo, for that person, Yahoo has more influence.

Paul: I like that.

Chris: Right?

Paul: Like Goggle doesn’t have more influence…

Chris: On the individual searches.

Paul: I like that a lot.

Chris: They have influence in, you know, in the search realm and they have more people who prefer Google searches but the people who use Yahoo use it and like it and like the results and are happy with it and they understand organic, I mean, you know, they may not understand organic but they typically understand just like most Google users that the top is sponsored ads, that the right is sponsored ads and those who are people who are paying for those positions and they understand, you know, if I click there, somebody’s probably going to try and sell me something. And if you’re a Yahooer, then you’re a Yahooer. If you’re a Googler, you’re a Googler and if Yahoo again. The bottom line is that if Yahoo brings enough search and enough clicks to use up your budget probably that should be generating income for you so you need to be doing it on Google also but it’s possible there are, I’m sure there are business models where the five dollars on Google isn’t profitable enough and the one dollar on Yahoo is. And so, if you are forced to grab your clicks from Google, you’d be in a world of hurt.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: They slapped this one up really quickly and you know, it does have some of the components that you want. I actually do like this first image. It’s got some of the cheesier stuff that we used to use when we designed long ago like, his “Plantation Shutters, only $17.45, Limited Time” wiggling back and forth at the top.

Paul: Looking like a seizure.

Chris: Yeah. We always like to have motion, but you’re right, we don’t want it to be seizure-inducing motion.

Paul: Yes!

Chris: That’s kind of; it’s actually just kind of annoying.

Paul: Yeah. Just you know, you want to stay away from anything that’s like seizuriffic.

Chris: Seizuriffic, I like it! That’s seizuriffic! Throwing me in to the seizure!

So, the other thing you notice is the links across the top. It’s obviously a template that was designed to have six links and he only has four.

Paul: Yeah.
