If you are reading this page you are probably as frustrated as I was that Community Builder gives you the useless message “Please log in or register to view or modify your profile.” if your user tries to view a page that requires registration. Why do I think this is useless? Well first let me preface this by saying, there very well may be a great solution to this problem that is just a few clicks outside of my view. If this is true please send me a comment to this post so I can help the community in general. Having said that, I researched this for a couple of hours, over a couple of days. Since I did not find something, for now, I will officially call this issue useless and stupid.
If my user wants to view/modify his profile (that is the page I am sending my user to, from the top menu), and they are not yet logged in, the default set-up of community builder should automatically forward my user to the login page. Or at least give me some Admin control of the statement the users sees. Here was my quick and dirty hack.
Find the default_language.php file, for me it was in this directory “components\com_comprofiler\plugin\language\default_language”. Open that file and search for our phrase or search for the variable _UE_REGISTERFORPROFILE. Once you find it replace the following :
DEFINE(‘_UE_REGISTERFORPROFILE’,'Please log in or register to view or modify your profile.’);
With
DEFINE(‘_UE_REGISTERFORPROFILE’,'Please log in or register to view or modify your profile.<br><a href=”index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=login&Itemid=55″>Click Here to Login</a>’);
Now at least the message will provide a link for your user to get to the login page.

Chris: Hi and welcome to the unknown secrets of SEO podcast!
Paul: Welcome back. Happy New Year everybody. Welcome to 2010.
Chris: This is going to be another banner year, 2010. 2009 was pretty awesome. We’re going to kind of cover that here in a bit.
Paul: 2009 was definitely an awesome year.
Chris: How was your New Year celebration?
Paul: It was cool, you know, a kind of low-key, hang out with the family, went to a party, brought my 16-year-old nephew. (laughing)
Chris: (laughing)
Paul: It’s just wrong. We had a great time though.
Chris and
Paul: (laughing)
Paul: It was kind of cool. Nothing crazy. How about yourself?
Chris: Cool. I was up in New Jersey.
Paul: Cali?
Chris: No, I was actually up in New Jersey for two weeks with — this is the first podcast in a long time so your listeners will have noticed a dead spot and then now we’re picking back up again. I was in New Jersey for two weeks for — through Christmas. I actually spent New Year’s here in Houston at a Panamanian party. My wife is Panamanian so those are always a good time.

Chris: And so, we started covering that which is kind of our attempt at addressing John Reynolds’ question and we’re going to cover that next time. Now, we want to do the yearend review and we got a couple of things. This was a great year for our podcast. Our listenership is way up. We really do appreciate you guys. Please keep the emails coming in. I didn’t mention that you can email us at podcast@e-webstyle.com. Send them in just like Gino. You know, you’re going to get on the air. By the way, Gino is at least the domain name with his email is etrack.net.au which is of course an Australian domain name and it’s just coming soon page. He doesn’t have anything up yet. So, well, that will be in our blog. So, Gino, you’re going to get some backlink traffic for that. Anybody who wants to write to us, you know, we’re going to bring you up and you’re going to end up getting some backlink traffic. So, you get some backlink love from e-webstyle.
Paul: Back link love from e-webstyle.
Chris: So, you are …
Paul: Which is important.
Chris: It is very important.
Paul: It is very important.
Chris: It’s actually the most important thing.
Paul: There you go.
Chris: Yeah.
Paul: There you go.
Chris: So, we thought — let’s cover — you know, we talk continuously, we talk about different clients, we talk about the things that you need to be doing on a regular basis and we think we do a pretty good job of stressing those things that are very important. Here in our 2009 yearend review, we wanted to just kind of reiterate, reemphasize those things and, you know, frankly some of us were like a little surprised of how important some of these ratings, factors were and we’ll discuss why they are so important. We also want to talk a little bit about, you know, the other huge thing probably through ’09 starting in ’08 was social media.

Chris: Right? So, if a link farm is something that you’re trying and you know you don’t like them and no Google user is going to like them, then don’t mess with them, right? If you’re going to put some sort of link with — you know, maybe you’re using Blue One Armed Widgets but you’re selling something else. You know, that’s not a good experience for Google.
Paul: It’s not.
Chris: So, if you’re out there creating bad experiences for Internet users, you’re creating bad experiences for Google users and you’re not going to do well.
Paul: Yeah. And remember, that’s a — I like you brought it up ’cause remember you have to balance — SEO is kind of like you have to please the user and you have to please the Google bot, for example. You know, you got to get the search engine to return your websites, the search engine has to like it but if you’re on the first page, first position and your website sucks and you have no content which happens, then the visitor is going to bounce.

Chris: And — so all of those — all of those — now, those are actually profiles. So, when you go into each one of those profiles then you can see details about the traffic to individual pages. So, I’m a little confused about your question. Hopefully, that answers. I think — the short answer when you say, should you use a brand new profile for each page in the website? The answer is no. One profile for all of the pages in your website is correct. And you do need to make sure that the Google Analytics code is on every page in your website.
So, we typically design our websites so that there’s a header page and a footer page and it’s consistent throughout. We’ve talked about website consistency and the value of that for your searchers, for your visitors. And then we’ll just add the Google Analytics code into the footer or the header or something along those lines. And so, hopefully, Darren, hopefully, that answered your question. If not, hit us back and we’ll clarify it just a little bit more and we’ll get a better answer for you.
Paul: But good question, Darren. You got a couple of great questions. Another piece of fan mail from southwest of Western Australia from John Reynolds and johnreynoldsmedia.com.
Chris: That’s the Pacific, right?
Paul: That’s what I thought it was or he was like, southwest of Western Australia would be the middle of the Pacific Ocean. So, he’s broadcasting his pirate signal from a boat. So, what’s up, John? John had a question. He says …
Chris: B y the way, Western — there’s like areas like New South Wales was a part. Western Australia may be a province.

Paul: Here’s some more stuff that we don’t really find that’s important. I just want to give you guys examples of, hey, what are the other — here’s some of the other 197 things, John. Okay. Keyword use and external link anchor text on the page. I mean, yeah, you should do it, it’s good, but it’s not something you need to do. Keyword use in page folder URL, keyword use in page name URL, I mean, keyword use in the sub-domain name or we can keep going on and on. Keyword use in comment tags in the HTML. Keyword use in — I mean there’s so many different things that you could stuff keywords into but you don’t need to do all of it. And I know some of you are out there saying, well, crap, every time I listen to you, you give me four other things that I could do for you SEO. Can I do all of these, you know? If you have an unlimited budget and unlimited time, yeah, you should do all of this.
