Chris: Hi and welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast!

Paul: Hey, everybody. Welcome back to the ‑ to a crappy World Cup ref podcast.

Chris: Yeah, just for the record, we got ripped off.

Paul: Yes. That’s why we’re starting the podcast a little late because we were sitting there watching our team get ripped by a ref.

Chris: Yeah.

Paul: It sucks!

Chris: Man. The players were livid after the game.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: Livid. And they hadn’t even seen the replay yet. I mean, this is two of I don’t know.

Paul: I’m kind of down now, man.

Chris: Yeah. This is ‑ you know what? I got something I got around and I was going to save this for later, but I got how to get you cheered up right away.

Paul: Certainly, yeah.

Chris: Oh, by the way, my name is Chris Burres with SEO ‑ I mean, the owner of E-Webstyle.

Paul: And this Paul Hanson. I’m the sales manager here at e-webstyle.com.

Chris: You are listening to the most popular SEO podcast on iTunes. This is podcast number 63. The last podcast was podcast number 62 for you guys keeping count. I’m just going to start up right away. I got to start with this to kind of lift up the mood.

Paul: Okay. Continue reading “Search Engine Visitor Optimization (SEVO) Houston” »

Chris: Intuit websites.  I don’t know if you guys know but Intuit QuickBooks and whatever, they actually   you can get a website through them, host it through them, you know, build it yourself.  Apparently, all of them were down.

Paul: Oh, that sucks.

Chris: And they’re back up.  And you know what?  We’re getting   we’re getting kind of an accolade if we’re going to stretch this one a little bit.  Matt Cutts is taking a page out of our book, right?

Paul: Get your own content, fool.

Chris: Yeah, get your own process of analyzing content in front of an audience, right?  Apparently, there is   and not apparently.  There is a really nice video.  It’s on   Google recently had their event I/O where they actually gave out EVOs.  I didn’t get one there.  I’m not that cutting edge.  And one of the videos, one of the seminars, and there’s a video on the YouTube website for that event, is SEO’s site advice from the experts.  And it’s pretty cool because what it does is   and he starts it off as pretty funny.  He starts off and says, “I ask people to submit a website.  I figured I’d get like 20.  I got 500.”  So we’re going to all of them six seconds at a time (Laughing). Paul: Yeah. So you want to, you know, spend some time on it. Throw a keyword in there to ‑ don’t jus throw keywords in them without ‑ without having actually a coherent thought. But put some keywords in it and move on. Make sure it’s about your core business and what you do and about what’s on that page and move on. Don’t spend a bunch of ‑ don’t spend hours and hours and hours on it.

Chris: All right. So I think that’s number three. A Flash website without a HTML alternative.

Paul: I mean seriously, who does this? Come on.

Chris: I know. That’s like making a bad call on the World Cup.

Paul: Aw, man! Aw!

Chris: Stupid. Stupid and frustrating, and you know, if you realize you’re doing it and you don’t know the way out, give us a call. Let us know. Hire an SEO guy. ‘Cause really, the challenge ‑ and this also goes back to that example that Matt Cutts was talking about, which was all images, right? And there was actually text on the page that was written in images. Guess what? Google does not ‑ I’m going to get technical ‑ Google does not ‑ Google Buzz do not OCR your pictures.

Paul: What’s OCR?

Chris: Optical character recognition.

Paul: Oh!

Chris: Ooh! Yeah (Laughing).

Paul: Technical terms. Continue reading “Website design consistency and SEO” »

Chris: Hi and welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast!

Paul: What’s up, everybody? Welcome back to another fun-filled Friday. It’s podcast time.

Chris: Woo-hoo! This is podcast number 62. Last podcast surprisingly was podcast number 61.

Paul: (Laughing) That actually is surprising ’cause I’m like where we at, 47? 72? 13?

Chris: There’s 52 weeks in a year. We’re ‑ yeah. We’ve been doing this at least nine months.

Paul: Yeah (Laughing).

Chris: (Laughing) You are listening to the most popular SEO podcast on iTunes. We love it when you stalk us, when you haunt us, when you corral us and then throw us into a pot that includes you writing a review about us.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: And you can do that and we appreciate when our listeners do that. Just go to iTunes, create an account, submit a review. It’s a review, right? Review. I keep thinking like testimonial.

Paul: A review and a rating.

Chris: A review and a rating. We only have 20 ratings. We’re shooting for a thousand and 20. So then everyone will doubt ratings. Yeah. How do these guys get a thousand and 20 ratings? This is ridiculous. This is ridonkulous. This isn’t going to work.

Paul: Ridonkulous! I love that word. Continue reading “Keyword Selector Tool, Broad Match Versus Phrase Match Versus Exact Match” »

Chris: Yeah. Yeah, while they were up and alive. You know who else the founders of Kazaa, you know, other company they started?

Paul: Who?

Chris: Skype.

Paul: Wow! That’s cool.

Chris: Same dudes.

Paul: I didn’t know that.

Chris: Same dudes. Kind of like PayPal. It took illegal and free. (Laughing)

Paul: (Laughing) They got to a legitimate business.

Chris: Into ‑ yeah. I love their ‑ their URL, RDIO, instead of RADIO, radio. It’s RDIO.

Paul: That’s kind of cool. So hopefully those guys do well. And Chrome is to provide video tech free streaming in the Chrome. There’s something called WebM but it sounds kind of cool.

Chris: We’re going to do a shout-out. Do you got any shout-outs? Did you collect all the shout-outs from last time that you promised this time?

Paul: Ah, I did not. Sorry. Err!

Chris: Oh, I’m sorry.

Paul: I want a shout-out to all of our Facebook friends. I was taking a look at our Facebook page. What’s up to everybody on Facebook? That’s where I’m in now. I don’t remember anyone’s name except for our homeboy and he knows who he is.

Sixty-second Internet Marketing Podcast May 28th 2010. Third page of Transcription

Paul: Top ten reasons why ‑ top ten things to look out for when selecting a web designer or an SEO. I’ve just read that article and that’s how I know Kazaa.

Chris: Yeah. Or, you know, top five things to make sure your SEO has under their belt or whatever. Those ‑ people are really interested in those top three, top five, top ten kinds of articles and you can collect their email address and their name from that, and that gives you the opportunity now to interact with them further beyond just ‑ just them coming to your website and leaving. So there’s a lot of value. That’s another call to action. Of course, the phone number and, you know, put call us. Call us now.

Paul: Call us now.

Chris: Also chat, instant chat, you know, on the website. You’ll see ‑ you’re seeing ‑ you’re starting to see that more and more and there’s a lot of value in it. There are people who do not want to pick up the phone and call and they’re happy to interact via, you know, instant message or web-based instant message. So, you know, a live person or an online chat is a great thing and that’s actually a call to action.

Paul: I for one would prefer to chat because I don’t like to get to press 1 for this, press 2 for that. I’m like “Hey, I’m going to chat with somebody. This is what I’m looking for. Bang, bang, bang.” I think that’s awesome. I like seeing those things.

Chris: Yup. Now, that’s really good as well.

Paul: Why don’t you go into your design? Your…

Chris: Well, this is a key one and I think it can be easily overlooked and kind of assumed, which is easy navigation. Continue reading “Top 10 things to look out for when selecting a web designer or SEO” »

Chris: Hi and welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast!

Paul: What’s up, everybody? Welcome back to the Unknown Secrets of SEO. Special shout-out to everyone that’s watching us. There’s about eight or nine of you all out there watching us. So what’s up, you all?

Chris: Thanks for tuning in exactly at 9:15 Central Standard Time. Okay, I’m a little late.

Paul: Yeah, come on.

Chris: The clock’s a little slack. My name is Chris Burres, owner of E-Webstyle.

Paul: And I’m Paul Hanson, sales manager at E-Webstyle.

Chris: As usual, we like to talk about what we spoke about in our last podcast. This is podcast number 61. You are listening to the most popular SEO podcast on iTunes. Thanks to you, guys, and I’m pointing at you at the camera. Thank you, guys. In our last podcast ‑ do you remember what we talked about in our last podcast?

Paul: No.

Chris: No?

Paul: Don’t make me lie.

Chris: I’m going to have to send out some sort of memo to the staff of the Unknown Secrets of SEO. Wait, I’m part of that. Actually, I’ll say one word and it will ring your bell? No.

Paul: (Laughing)

Chris: Remind you? ‘Cause it’s pretty bad when douche rings your bell (Laughing).

Paul: There you go (Laughing). You just said ring my bell and I was like, “Wow, that’s usually reserved for you know.”

Chris: The ladies (Laughing). And if you can do that with one word, whew!

Paul: Like God, we need to talk, men. Maybe I need to learn that.

Chris: Douche. It’s even bad when the word is douche. So yeah, at our last podcast, we talked about…

Paul: Douchebaggery!

Chris: Douchebaggery. Don’t be a douche. The douchiness of design.

Paul: Yes. And being a douche in your SEO. Continue reading “SEO and Apple iPads iPhones” »

Chris: ‘Cause we are internationally recognized as SEO experts. Thank you very much. All right. So what do we got?

Paul: I ‑ I did a little research on keyword match types and I’ve titled this “Long Tail Versus Short Tail,” but that’s wrong.

Chris: Keyword match types. Okay.

Paul: Okay. So everybody, everybody at this point should have had some experience with the Google keyword selector tool. Let me give a little sidebar, a little tangent here. There is a new keyword selector tool. If you used it, you’d know it always had keyword at Google AdWords Beta because it was always in beta. So there’s a new keyword selector tool. You can actually use both and if you’ve had trouble getting to either one of them as probably ‑ my ‑ like if you Google it, it doesn’t always come up as the first result now, and I think it’s because they’re just maybe within the last three weeks released both and…

Chris: Oh, let me understand this. A Google product is not the first result in the Google search engine.

Paul: Which is odd. Man, which is odd. Yeah, I was like “Whoa!” Continue reading “Google Keyword Selector Tool not in First Position” »

Paul: So, that’s ‑ that’s only available in the UK and in Canada. It’s not ‑ no one knows when it’s coming to the US or not. So, it is coming but just not. We’re not sure yet.

Chris: So what does the plus do again?

Paul: It helps you ‑ it tells the keyword selector tool that this word is of utmost importance.

Chris: Oh, okay. Perfect.

Paul: So if you put broad match ‑ checking account in the broad match…

Chris: It will lean towards that word.

Paul: It will probably say, “Okay, this…”

Chris: So even though checking and account are in a lot of stuff, it will show you first checking and then…

Paul: And, you know, it will use different variations of account, you know, banking ‑ bank account, but it’s probably going to look for checking in there first. So, and I’ll ‑ when it comes here, I will play a little more ‑ play a little more with it and tell you exactly how it works. Okay. And just…

Chris: By the way, for all of you non-Houstonians, Coug is Cougars at the University of Houston which we’re both alum.

Paul: Woo-hoo! That’s right.

Chris: That is…

Paul: What’s up (Laughing). And another little key point that I put in here about ‑ and this is kind of going towards long tail, short tail ‑ is if you decrease the number of words that you’re using and you’re ‑ and you’re like, if you want to go after checking account, let’s say you’re a bank or you’re an SEO for a bank and you want to go after checking account, we need to decrease the number of words that you’re going after or you’re optimizing for. It decreases the likelihood of relevancy. And if you increase the number of words like high-yield checking account Houston, Texas, you are increasing the chances of the relevancy to you. Paul: Wow!

Paul: Wow!

Chris: 6-0. We should have like cigars and scotch except that’s because I just had kids.

Paul: (Laughing) Why do we got to wait till you had kids?
