Chris: Hi! Welcome to the Unknown Secrets of SEO podcast!

Paul: Welcome back to another fun-filled edition podcast number…

Chris: 45. No, this has to be 46. That was last week.

Paul: 46. Podcast number 46. Welcome back. We’ve got some good stuff for you today.

Chris: We know exactly what we’re doing, podcast 46.

Paul: Yes.

Chris: I’m catching up here. I am unbelievably excited today, just like jumping out of my shorts excited today. I’m so excited I’m going to keep talking about it until you think I’m not really excited, I’m just saying it to try and get some stuff inside.

Paul: No.

Chris: No. I was perusing iTunes last night. We are the most popular SEO podcast on iTunes and we have got some killer reviews.

Paul: Oh, yeah.

Chris: Oh, man.

Paul: Thank you to everybody who has put in a review.

Chris: This is awesome. We really, you know, we get feedback, we love feedback, and when we see, you know, people who have taken the time to actually create an iTunes account, go on to iTunes and actually submit a review especially these amazing reviews. The only thing is just we don’t their websites, so we can’t give any link love and we’re all about giving link love.

Paul: So, what’s up for today?

Chris: Oh, are we done?

Paul: What about Buzz? What was Buzz?

Chris: Well, Google Buzz. You can cover that.

Paul: Okay.

Chris: I’ll be right back.

Paul: A day or two ago, I was following a friend of mine on Facebook. She brings up, “Oh, now there’s ‑ Buzz is out. I got something else to take me away from my time. I got Facebook, I got Twitter, and now there’s Buzz.” And I’m like wow, this chick is not an IT or anything like that. So, I’m like man, I need to catch myself up on what’s going on, so I should have been first to catch it. So, I Google Google Buzz and this is what it kind of looks like. It’s like Gmail with a social media.

Chris: Well, Facebook is more social media. Yeah, social. So, Delicious is one. BlinkList, which I have never used. StumbleUpon which I actually like. I use it on my lunch breaks all the time. And Digg.com. So, those are social bookmarking sites and so you want to try and get your website on one of those. And so, often what we talk about when we’re talking about the process of engaging and social marketing, you actually have to be a member of those sites typically, and you want to have friends who have influence, you know, friends who a lot of people follow, a lot of people like to follow what they dig or what they find as delicious or what the blink at.

And so, when you have those people and you can get them to reference your website, boom, you’re going to have ‑ not only, in those cases, it’s good for getting indexed, for people finding you, but it’s also just to get for, you know, backlink love. It’s good for traffic, traffic in general, you know. You definitely want traffic on your website.

Paul: We’ve talked about that over and over. Get on, you know, get your social media on people.

Chris: Yeah, it works. It works. And, you know, even Mo Serious, Chuck.

Paul: Chuck.

Chris: Chuck.

Paul: The SEO rapper.

Paul: Portal. Maybe, just maybe. They are a world-class portal, which happened to be Netscape, which happen to be a diamond dozen.

Chris: Thank you. I remember Netscape. I hope Yahoo. doesn’t take that.

Paul: Are they even around anymore? Netscape?

Chris: I think they are. I don’t know.

Paul: And there are some people out there like, “Net who?” Netscape was the bomb back in the day.

Chris: When we started doing web design, we actually designed, and I know I’ve mentioned this one other podcast, we actually designed our websites for Netscape only because that was the predominant, the dominant preeminent browser. Then, we slowly had to start designing for Netscape and IE because IE started gaining popularity. For a while there, we were only designing for IE ’cause again, it was the dominant browser, significant and by a significant margin.

And now, we’re having the transition and star, you know, accommodating Firefox ’cause there are subtle differences that can have a significant impact on the look and feel of your ‑ well, not really a feel but the look of your browser. Images can get juxtaposed and things like that. So, now, in our shop, we’ve got a design for two browsers. Thank you, Microsoft for not conforming to the specifications of HTML. Thank you very much.

I was reading a list of bizarre complaints that web people have had and one of them is like, “So, we want you to do our website. We don’t want you to use any of that HTML crap because our technical guys don’t know how to use it.” Are you sure you want a website? You sure you want a website, right? Like, here. Here’s your website. All you need to do is hand out this CD to groups of people. It’s totally not in HTML.

Paul: Yeah. He’s doing this and I’m like. They can’t see you, most of them. And he brought up a good point. Long tail keywords, this is a word that I’m not familiar with. And so, I’ve moved the concept, not the actual word. He brought in two words, long tail and short tail keywords. A long tail keyword is basically ‑ we’ll just go a short tail keyword would be stop smoking.

Chris: Yeah, quit smoking.

Paul: Or I want to opt ‑ here’s one. Here’s what I’ve never recommended. I want to optimize my website for the word Google. I know somebody has thought about that.

Chris: When somebody types in Google, I want to show up first.

Paul: Okay, I would not recommend that.

Chris: Probably no ROI there.

Chris: Hi and welcome to the unknown secrets of SEO podcast!

Paul: Welcome back. Happy New Year everybody. Welcome to 2010.

Chris: This is going to be another banner year, 2010. 2009 was pretty awesome. We’re going to kind of cover that here in a bit.

Paul: 2009 was definitely an awesome year.

Chris: How was your New Year celebration?

Paul: It was cool, you know, a kind of low-key, hang out with the family, went to a party, brought my 16-year-old nephew. (laughing)

Chris: (laughing)

Paul: It’s just wrong. We had a great time though.

Chris and

Paul: (laughing)

Paul: It was kind of cool. Nothing crazy. How about yourself?

Chris: Cool. I was up in New Jersey.

Paul: Cali?

Chris: No, I was actually up in New Jersey for two weeks with — this is the first podcast in a long time so your listeners will have noticed a dead spot and then now we’re picking back up again. I was in New Jersey for two weeks for — through Christmas. I actually spent New Year’s here in Houston at a Panamanian party. My wife is Panamanian so those are always a good time.

Chris: And so, we started covering that which is kind of our attempt at addressing John Reynolds’ question and we’re going to cover that next time. Now, we want to do the yearend review and we got a couple of things. This was a great year for our podcast. Our listenership is way up. We really do appreciate you guys. Please keep the emails coming in. I didn’t mention that you can email us at podcast@e-webstyle.com. Send them in just like Gino. You know, you’re going to get on the air. By the way, Gino is at least the domain name with his email is etrack.net.au which is of course an Australian domain name and it’s just coming soon page. He doesn’t have anything up yet. So, well, that will be in our blog. So, Gino, you’re going to get some backlink traffic for that. Anybody who wants to write to us, you know, we’re going to bring you up and you’re going to end up getting some backlink traffic. So, you get some backlink love from e-webstyle.

Paul: Back link love from e-webstyle.

Chris: So, you are …

Paul: Which is important.

Chris: It is very important.

Paul: It is very important.

Chris: It’s actually the most important thing.

Paul: There you go.

Chris: Yeah.

Paul: There you go.

Chris: So, we thought — let’s cover — you know, we talk continuously, we talk about different clients, we talk about the things that you need to be doing on a regular basis and we think we do a pretty good job of stressing those things that are very important. Here in our 2009 yearend review, we wanted to just kind of reiterate, reemphasize those things and, you know, frankly some of us were like a little surprised of how important some of these ratings, factors were and we’ll discuss why they are so important. We also want to talk a little bit about, you know, the other huge thing probably through ‘09 starting in ‘08 was social media.

Chris: Right? So, if a link farm is something that you’re trying and you know you don’t like them and no Google user is going to like them, then don’t mess with them, right? If you’re going to put some sort of link with — you know, maybe you’re using Blue One Armed Widgets but you’re selling something else. You know, that’s not a good experience for Google.

Paul: It’s not.

Chris: So, if you’re out there creating bad experiences for Internet users, you’re creating bad experiences for Google users and you’re not going to do well.

Paul: Yeah. And remember, that’s a — I like you brought it up ’cause remember you have to balance — SEO is kind of like you have to please the user and you have to please the Google bot, for example. You know, you got to get the search engine to return your websites, the search engine has to like it but if you’re on the first page, first position and your website sucks and you have no content which happens, then the visitor is going to bounce.
