Set Outlook to allow .exe files

April 25th, 2008

If Outlook is currently telling you “Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachements .exe” and you need access to that document.  You can let the person who sent you that document know that they need to zip the file before they send it or you can set you Outlook to allow you access.  All you have to do is follow this link and Microsoft does a great job of walking you through how to make this happen.  You will need to do a reboot.

Heres the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829982

Houston Improv, Family Entertainment Houston

April 20th, 2008

I recently took an amazing course called Life is Improv from an organization called Third Coast Comedy.  I have always enjoyed improv and felt that I would do reasonable well Houston Improv for Family Entertainmentat improv.  I also understood that getting on stage and enlarging my comfort zone would help me to be more successful in my businesses and everything I do.  Dave, the instructor, does a great job of teaching improv and letting the class learn and express themselves in this unique performing art.  The environment is incredibly safe.  One of the first things you come to understand is that everything you do in the class is perfect.  There is no judgment only growth.  WOW being in that environemnt alone is worth a ton.  Dave also does a great job of allowing people to express the experiences each individual goes through with each of the different games.  This really changes this from a performing arts training/practice course to an experiential personal growth course.  All of this and it is incredibly fun.

Shortly after a few course Third Coast Comedy invited me to join there regularly performing Friday night troupe.  Now almost every Friday you can find me on stage with the Third Coast Comedy players.  The event is a family friendly event.  Great Family Entertainment in Houston.

So come out and see us.  We perform Improv like you would see on “Who’s Line is it anyway”, with host Drew Carey.  We are family friendly and you or your kids might be asked on stage to play with us.  Don’t hesitate because our stage is one place where everything you say is exactly perfect.

Keywords!! Make sure to choose the right SEO Company Houston

April 17th, 2008

Good Search Engine Optimization (SEO) companies can get you good search engine placement for your keywords.  Great SEO companies first make sure you are dealing with the right keywords and then get you great Search Engine Placement.

Search Engine Optimization KeywordsThis sounds obvious and indeed it is obvious.  The challenge lies in putting it into practice.  You are probably thinking how challenging could this be, Chris give me an example.  I love examples and here is a great one.

I recently had a Webdesign, SEO meeting with one of our large IT Clients who happens to be an Orthopedic surgery center.  We sat down with the management staff and discussed the usual, how flashy should the site be, how practical should the site be, what administrative features could affect, in a positive way, the business processes of the company (yes, we always talk about this with our Web Design/SEO customers).  All these topics where integrated with an eye for SEO.

Prior to the meeting I had researched and compiled 45 keywords that I felt would be relevant for this company.  Things like bone doctor, spine surgeon, ankle doctor, sports doctor, and relevant local versions of those keywords.  As we were discussing the fundamentals of the website it dawned one me that although these keywords were very appropriate and valuable to the client they were not the most valuable terms we could have selected.  It turns out that the most valuable terms were not terms geared toward customers.  The most valuable terms would be those that are geared toward other doctors, in the hopes of getting them to refer patients.

You can understand that having the website land one doctor who continuously refers patients to my client had significant value.  Now we put together the best set of keywords, those keywords that not only drive relevant traffic to the site but actually drive the most valuable relevant traffic to the site.

Make sure you choose the right SEO company.  Your company deserves the best!!

mswinsock.winsock .asp

October 17th, 2007

I spent much time trying to register the mswinsck.ocx component on my server and then getting the component to work inside of a .asp page.  I had no luck.  I recieved all sorts of message:

winsock connecting
Wrong protocol or connection state for the requested transaction or request
winsock resolving host

I was able to get two components to work:
One is by Dart.com http://dart.com/ptwsk.aspx
This component seems to be very hardy and worked with no problems.

The other component is by http://www.ostrosoft.com and can be found here http://www.ostrosoft.com/oswinsck.asp
This component does not seem as hardy, it does not allow you to see the state of the component, it only allows you to use delays to wait until you have recieved data.

The OStrosoft component runs $59.00 for a license on one server

Darts component runs $249.00.

Regarding the mswinsck.ocx component and (”mswinsock.winsock”), the only documentation I was able to find about this component and its compatability with .asp pages was found on the Ostrosoft website they component comparison chart says that the Microsoft Winsock Control “Can be used only in Visual Basic Professional or Enterprise edition”  which does seem to exclude .asp pages.

I hope this was helpful.  I spent about 8 hours trying to get the Microsoft Winsock Control to work.

Backup you MS SQL database to another server

September 26th, 2007

In this entry I will show you how to schedule a backup of your ms sql server database tables to flat files on the same server.

In my case I like to have these back-ups because it will be much easier to recover from disaster on the production server and because it is much easier to fix small dumb mistakes I have done on the production server like and it gives me table by table flexibility.

Recover from bad update command

Recover from bad insert command

Recover from dumb sql commands

From your target computer.(the computer where you want the backups)

You will want to create a blank database on the local sql server as your target.

Open up Enterprise Manager and connect to your sql database.

After connected to your database right click on the database or tables icon go to ‘All Tasks’ and select export data.

In the Data Transformation Services Import/Export Wizard select next.

Since you were already connected to the database you want to export from the first screen ‘Choose a Data Source’ should be properly populated click next.

Now select the target database on your local server.

Select Next

Leave the Copy Table and Views checked and press next

Select (check) all the tables and views you want to backup Press Next

Now check the Schedule DTS package for later execution.  You can leave the Run immediately checked if you like.

Select the button to the right with the three dots as in this image.

Recover from sql upload

Select the schedule for which you want your backup to run.

Make sure the Save DTS Package is checked.

I always save it as SQL Server Meta Data Services

Press Next

Now enter the details of how to save this backup package.  You want to save this on the database at the source which will be the default settings.

If you want to delete the backup package or make changes you can find it in Enterprise Manager under Data Transformation – Local Packages

To Restore:

Make a copy of the table you want to restore or just delete all the data in that table.  Be very careful you need to know what you are doing here!!  I usually delete or rename the table where I am going to restore the data.

Right click the tables icon in the database you want to restore in Enterprise Manager and select All Tasks – Import Data

In the Data Transformation Services Import/Export Wizard select next.

Select the correct database from your local server, press next.

Since you started this import data from the correct database the next screen Choose a destination should be properly populated, press next.

Leave the copy Tables and views checked and press next

Select the tables you want to restore

Check Run immediately and select next and finish

Restore a table in MS SQL

September 26th, 2007

In this entry I will show you how to schedule a backup of your ms sql server database tables to flat files on the same server.

In my case I like to have these back-ups because it will be much easier to recover from disaster on the production server and because it is much easier to fix small dumb mistakes I have done on the production server like and it gives me table by table flexibility.

Recover from bad update command

Recover from bad insert command

Recover from dumb sql commands

Backing-up individual tables to the target computer using Flat Files.

From your source computer.

First you must connect to your sql database from Enterprise Manager.

After connected to your database right click on the database or tables icon go to ‘All Tasks’ and select export data.

In the Data Transformation Services Import/Export Wizard select next.

Since you were already connected to the database you want to export from the first screen ‘Choose a Data Source’ should be properly populated click next.

In the Destination drop-down select text file (it will be at the bottom)

Now select a target location and file name I suggest you use the name of the table you are going to put in that file.  Include the .txt which

is necessary in this case.

Select Next

Leave the Copy Table and Views checked and press next

At the top select the source table you want to backup.

I leave all the other settings as default. Press Next

Backup ms SQL text file

Now check the Schedule DTS package for later execution.  You can leave the Run immediately checked if you like.

Select the button to the right with the three dots as in this image

 Recover from sql upload

Select the schedule for which you want your backup to run.

Make sure the Save DTS Package is checked.

I always save it as SQL Server Meta Data Services

Press Next

Now enter the details of how to save this backup package.  Probably should give it a name like tblCatToProdDailyFlatFile.  You want to save this on the database at the source which will be the default settings.

If you want to delete the backup package or make changes you can find it in Enterprise Manager under Data Transformation – Local Packages

To Restore a single table:

Make a copy of the table you want to restore or just delete all the data in that table.  Be very careful you need to know what you are doing here!!  You can use this sql command and run it from  query analyzer to empty out the table “Delete From [yourtable]”.  No matter how you do it you will need the correct table structure to import the data.

If you have some auto increment fields you will need to remove the auto increment so the data can be imported.  After importing turn the auto increment back on.

Right click the tables in the database you want to restore and select All Tasks – Import Data

In the Data Transformation Services Import/Export Wizard select next.

On the Choose a data Source select text file from the Data Source Drop down

Locate the text file you want to restore press ok and then press Next

Press next with the default command for file format (assuming you used the default when you created the back-up)

Press next and next again at the Specify Column Delimiter

Select the correct database at the Choose a destination screen.

Make sure that it is going to go to the correct table (which will be easier if the file name has the same name as the table)  Click the transform button a screen similar to below will pop-up.

Click in the destination column on the first row and select the target field. (this should be the first field for the first row and the second field for the second row.) Press OK

Press Next

Restore a backup of a table

Check Run immediately and select next and finish

Make sure to recreate any Auto increment fields you have in the table definition.
