First Page Ranking Strategies

Chris Burres:               I responded and just said basically there’s a lot of factors we’re not really sure. Send us your site and we’ll give you an analysis on that. Into a little bit of news. Google is sued in the European Union.

This is something really interesting. We grow up here we’re in this American cocoon and the rest of the world recognizes it. It doesn’t necessarily understand it and we have our concept of free speech.

Charles Lewis:             I say what I want to say.

Chris Burres:               Exactly. Apparently the concept of free speech is slightly different everywhere else. I always assumed it was the same in the European Union. Apparently it’s different.

Basically some guy went in and typed his name and an article that was in an existing newspaper website came up on Google. That’s what Google does.

Charles Lewis:             I guess drob–  I don’t know where I got that.

Chris Burres:               I don’t know but I like it. Drob it’s going to go into our glossary.

Charles Lewis:             So, you can drob images right into the Google search and it will pull images that look similar to that one. The point of the matter is people are using image search so you must optimize images.

When you do an image search on Google and an image shows you click it and you like it takes you to that page which is essentially on your website. Take advantage of image search. That’s another way to get the listing on a first page.

Number two is Local. We were just talking local earlier today. Make sure you’re taking advantage of your local+ page. Make sure you have that set up and it’s completely correct with all the information.

If it’s a local search then you definitely want to be there. Local searches get clicked most they list higher than the typical organic listings. That’s another way to be on a search engine results page.

Chris Burres:               Hoepefully it goes smooth. I haven’t used instant messenger in for ever Microsoft instant messenger. I used to use it a lot. I haven’t used it in a while.

Charles Lewis:             I’ve never had hotmail or the hotmail or the account that you needed to do that.

Chris Burres:               Yes, it was the hotmail or a live account. This is interesting. What’s the international police organization? it’s got a really cool name; Interpol.

Charles Lewis:                         International Police Organization? IPO.

Chris Burres:               Interpol. IPO [Laughter] Interpol took down a hacking group that sold ransomware. I just thought that was really interesting. Do you know how software will pop on your computer and say you’ve been infected click here for 39 dollars and we’ll uninfect it?

Charles Lewis:             You click that and you get infected.

Chris Burres:               You click that you pay the thirty nine dollars, it does something, it comes back and says oh, it’s worst than we thought. For thirty nine more dollars we’ll make sure we get it all clean. Then that keeps going. The dude was making seven million dollars a month off. Some dude in Russia. This group similar–

Charles Lewis:             Russia.

Chris Burres:               Maybe they got some retribution today. [Laughter] Their pop up would say “hey, we’ve noticed that you’ve been visiting terrorist websites, child pornography websites” and other things that people would not want to be associated with and paid this fine. Literally they presented themselves as Interpol. “Pay this waver to get away for something.” 3% of the people did it.

Charles Lewis:             Wow. If that was legit they wouldn’t be emailing you or popping up. They would be knocking at your door.

Chris Burres:               Yes. There is no waver for child pornography. There is no waver for suspected terrorists.

Different Methods to Make Your Mobile Site More Effective

Charles Lewis:             If you’re a brick and mortar business then having the contact page and locations all of that is key. Having the click that automatically goes to Google Maps having that address be at link.

Those are key functions that 90% of the people searching on a mobile device for your type of business are looking to do. A click to call for an example is a key function you must have.

Chris Burres:               An address. I can’t tell you that’s one of those times when you’re doing what you’re not be doing. I need that address in a map. I can’t click it because it has not been made clickable. Now I’ve got to stretch out the copy–

Charles Lewis:             Exactly, so I can read it, then remember it and then go to nav and type.

Chris Burres:               I copy it. I press it and then I might move those little pins back and forth and copy it and then go and paste this. The thing we’ve got [0:22:48] [Inaudible] on our streets.

Using Dashes, Not Underscores, for Subfolders and File Names

Chris Burres:    Hi and welcome to the SEO podcast – Unknown Secrets of Internet Marketing. My name is Chris Burres, owner of E-webstyle.

Charles Lewis:        I am Charles Lewis your internet marketing specialist.

Chris Burres:    Thank you guys for tuning in. This is podcast number 181. Of course that’s the one that follows 180.

Charles Lewis:        That’s the one before 182.

Chris Burres:    I think we got that covered. We have a tip from our previous podcast. That tip says in subfolders and file names use dashes not underscores.

Charles Lewis:    Google has put it already out there that in regards to URL structure dashes are more effective than underscores.

For example if your is example.com/the sub hyphen folder that’s a dash instead of flash underscore folder then another back slash and then your file name as well. Your file name could be chuck-chris-awesomejpg. You want to use those hyphens instead of underscores.

Chris Burres:        It makes sense.

Charles Lewis:        It separates the keywords and Google appreciates it more.

Chris Burres:    Remember we are your friendly local neighborhood Top Position Snatchers. Our mantra is

Charles Lewis:         “Don’t be a douche.”

Chris Burres:    If you’re in a position to, please, tweet now. You can see Charles if you’re watching the video. Charles is doing it. You have to be patient. This is exactly what he’s tweeting. What are you twitting?

Charles Lewis:    #seopodcast this is number 181. Make sure you tag us in @ewebstyle. That way we can link up and network and re-tweet, share, follow and all of that great social stuff.

Treating Social Media Like You Treat Your Content

Chris Burres:        Right.

Charles Lewis:    Great job on getting to know your information Mr. Maximus. If indeed they are a good agency  doing in SEO all the tips you’ve given them they probably already know. They probably listen to us.

Chris Burres:        Or tell them to listen to us. It’s a good idea.

Charles Lewis:    Sometimes giving out instructions to somebody who’s doing your SEO only because it maybe in their scope of the project you don’t want to get things off hands.

Chris Burres:    All right. Hopefully, our levels are a little bit better now. You may have covered this. I was little distracted if you’re giving them too many tips consider a change.

Charles Lewis:    Consider a change. If you’re giving them tips and they’re not doing it or haven’t done it or haven’t told you something like yes, we’re planning on doing that at this time then you may want to consider [0:09:12] [Inaudible].

Chris Burres:    Tell them to use us. [Laughter] They can still get a kick back. [Laughter] They can join our referral program and we’ll take care of your account. A little bit of news. Bing falls to fifth in global searches as a global search engine. It’s now behind the Yandex.

Charles Lewis:    It sucks. They come behind the name of the Yandex that rimes with spandex that just means–

Chris Burres:    Every now and then I’m on a different client’s computer. They’ve got a different search engine. Literally I’ll try it. I’ll plug in my search. Yesterday yahoo search came up I said “wow, this is impressively useless.” I pulled up Google same search

[0:10:00]

terms like Ding, Ging. Rrrrr! it’s the Google monsters, right?

Charles Lewis:    I’m still convinced that’s a pirate, but go ahead. [Laughter] That’s the noise that stuffed animals make when they make noises. Rrrrrr. Position one and position two are good results. They’re what I need. You get it so wrong Bing and Google gets it so right it’s continually impressive.

Bing is trying. They’ve been trying for years and even were stealing Google’s results and they weren’t as good as Google. Do you know what that tells you? It tells you how hard the search king is.

Social Media – Knowing your Audience

Charles Lewis:        Probably three or four times.

Chris Burres:    Don’t worry about over-saturating your audience because it’s going to be a one-time event. This is exciting it’s building up. By the time they might even think okay I’m getting tired of this the event happens. Great they’re aware of it hopefully tuning in.

Charles Lewis:    Definitely. Number four. Know and Write for Your Audience. This is key. Sometimes a lot of companies who come to us for social media help or SEO help they don’t have a good idea of who their audience is.

They end to write for themselves. We use the A/C repairs example here. Know your audience. If you’re targeting home owners who need their A/C fixed then write for them. HVAC vent blah, blah, blah is not a term they’re going to use.

They’re going to use A/C repair, they’re going to use heating repair. Use the terms and the language that they’re familiar with. Write to them, don’t write for yourself. Number five Respond to Every Question. It is one of the things I’m proud of. We try to do this here.

Various Quirks of SEO that you May Have Not Been Aware of

Chris Burres:               Excellent. This is from a long time listener and she interacts with us a lot. “I just listened to podcast 173. Thank you for answering my question about relative author tag. I now understand that “rel=em” is for when I have my own author/contributor page on a website where I posted a guest post. The “rel=author” attribute is for when my biographical information appears on the same web page as the post itself. Also thank you for reposting my article on Facebook. It was a real nice article. That was about videos, right? About SEO videos?

Charles Lewis:             Yes.

Chris Burres:               Then she added a couple of points. “Why on the link below” she’s talking about the link that we tend to post on Facebook when we add a new podcast to iTunes “are the partners shown as Chris and a light skinned, skinny brother named Paul rather than Chris and Chuck?”

When to Use HTTP and HTTPS

Charles Lewis:             You know; it is what it is.

Chris Burres:               We actually have both domains as you know. If you just go to ewebstyle.com you can get there. We like to very clearly distinguish the e and the webstyle because we like the name webstyle and e is actually old school [Laughter]. Ewebstyle. E-webstyle.

Charles Lewis:             From a practical perspective they look cheap and compromising. That may raise a caution flag when you reach out for links and citations. That’s why I disagree with. When you reach out for links and citations if your content is quality if your brand is there and you have something that people want to link to that they enjoy reading I think they pay attention to the hyphen in your domain name.

Chris Burres:               Apparently our audio is not that good today.

Charles Lewis:             Yeah?
